We are all angry. No matter what side of the fence you fall on, no matter how informed you are, or educated, everyone is angry. Our Facebook feeds are filled with rants about the shutdown, family and friends are calling to discuss the state of affairs, and we are all livid. The funny thing is, when you go out shopping, run out for groceries, or even pump gas, you see people who have been directly effected by this shutdown. They are scared. They are furloughed, they are unpaid, they are in the middle of a military move and cannot turn in expenses or receive their household goods, and everyone is completely unsettled and scared. I was shocked today with how quiet every store was, how many people look so pushed and worried, and I realized that with no end in sight, we are pulling together. We are kinder and filled with empathy for everyone we meet. We know that even when the shutdown ends, the inevitable fight over the debt ceiling that is coming will effect us all again.
When the founding fathers wrote the Constitution and created the position of the President, they did so to avoid any tyranny in our country’s future. The whole idea of the Congress and Senate was to provide checks and balances to our President so that no one man would hold power over the nation. What we are seeing now is the creation of a President who believes he is a monarch. He is blatantly not bipartisan, he refuses any compromise or to listen to his people, and he encourages the same behavior from his Members of Congress and Senate. As American citizens, this should outrage and terrify us. Our government was created to avoid this exact situation.
There is hope for us as a country. We are a nation of survivors. We are creators, inventors, believers, and we can effect change. If you are angry, take five minutes and write your Members of Congress. Educate yourself so that when November rolls around and it’s time to vote, we can makes some changes. Don’t whine on Facebook, make your vote count and speak out against injustice. That is what makes us Americans! We have a freedom of speech that most countries can’t even imagine. Use it. In the meantime, be kind to your fellow citizens. We are all hurting and it’s about time we cut down this divide and show our government how united we can be.
